Share your favourite piece of original canon.

We all have a favourite piece of original canon. Maybe that's a particular episode of a show, maybe a specific scene, maybe a whole storyline. Maybe it's one of those but from a movie. Maybe a comic, and you have a favourite piece of art. Maybe it's a chapter or a character in a book, or a song from a musical. Anything goes.

These kind of questions always have me stumped for an answer, because it's so hard to choose one. I feel like a parent being asked to choose their favorite child!

So, to simplify this, my favorite canon of 2024 was Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

My Hulu subscription was expiring and I've never seen the show so I decided to give it a try. I was curious about what's so good about the show that it became such an influential figure in pop culture. It rightfully deserves that position! There's many things that doesn't hold up very well nowadays, but overall the show holds up really well.

As to when exactly did I fall in love with this show... There were a lot to like in Season 1, "I may be dead, but I'm still pretty" is iconic, but Season 2 solidified the show's position as one of my favorites.

The scene of Buffy shooting the Judge with a bazooka is one of my all time favorite moments in the series. The whole episode Innocence was great, really.

I didn't care much about Angel in Season 1, but the Angelus plotline was fantastic. The scene where Giles found Jenny dead was very hard to watch.

Season 2 also introduced Drusilla and Spike, two of my favorite characters. I loved Spike from the moment he ran over the Sunnydale sign! Drusilla and Spike had such a fun Bonnie-and-Clyde relationship in the season. I ended up becoming a Spuffy shipper later on but still.

I am SO disappointed we didn't get more of Ethan Rayne in the series. Halloween was such a fun episode, and I think the show would have benefited from keeping him and his chaotic antics around longer.

Buffy herself was amazing in Season 2. I already liked her a lot in Season 1, but her character arc exploring her trauma from her first death and her accepting her role as Slayer despite her desires for a normal life made me fall in love with her. She's amazing!

Fandom can be a highly meaningful experience for many! We'd love to hear about how being part of a fandom has helped your life change for the better. Have you made any cherished memories or connections? Does fandom bring you joy? Tell us about the ways that fandom has helped you.

Fandom changed my life in so many ways, so it was challenging trying to settle on an answer for this one.

Fandom was the community I needed when I was lonely. I had just transferred from deaf classes to mainstream classes, from friends who I spent my childhood with to unfriendly hearing strangers. I had very limited opportunities to socialize with my old friends outside lunch period. Furthermore, our interests were starting to diverge, so when we did meet, it was awkward trying to find topics to talk about. It was a very rough transitional period, and I struggled a lot.

When I found online fandom communities, it was a blessing for me because I could chat with other people who shared my newfounded interests. I wasn't so lonely anymore with my fandom friends. I could tell them about my troubles and they were the good listeners I needed at that low point.

I don't know where I would be right now without fandom. I am so deeply grateful to fandom for being there during my difficult times.

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be be to set your own goals!

Write more fanfiction, and more importantly, post them!

I've always written some drabbles, but I never felt confident enough to post them anywhere online so I aim to change that this year. I just want to get better at writing, and part of that means having to be brave enough to ask for constructive feedback and be receptive to them.

I'm also trying to get better with my executive dysfunction, so I'm starting weekly accountability posts for myself.

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

When I started out, I was pretty inflexible as a fan. Part of my inflexibility came from my editing days at wikis, anything that diverged too much or inconsistent with a canon got on my nerves. Weirdly enough, I was alright with AUs, something about them being intentionally different from the canon didn't bother me at all. I also had very strict opinions regarding ships, such as who got to top or bottom, some extreme NOTPs, and more.

Since then, I've mellowed out quite a lot. It's so interesting to explore what-ifs in canons, and I don't mind inconsistencies anymore. I still have some shipping preferences, but they aren't very strong anymore. It doesn't annoy me if I see something that doesn't match my preferences. Sometimes I even discover new likes!

When I look back, I marvel at how much energy I had. I have to say I much prefer this significantly chilled-out me :)

Whether you've been in fandom for a while or just discovered fandom, we'd love to know how you came to fandom! Was it that one book or a TV show or movie or anime/manga or a band/song that gave you that first spark? Or a character or characters that you wanted more of but the canon material just didn't have enough of them? Or were you introduced to fandom by someone?

I was watching the One Piece anime for the first time when I wanted to look up some stuff, leading me to discover the One Piece wiki. While exploring the wiki for further information on the series, I found it had a fairly active blogging scene, so I decided to join. I spent around 3 years as an active editor and then stayed around in the community for another few years before finally leaving because I was disgruntled with Wikia's changes. (Even now, I still refuse to call them by their new name; I'm so furious they co-opted it for their own profits.)

Honestly, my time at the wiki wasn't the greatest due to various reasons, but I'm still glad with my work. I still keep in touch with some friends from the wiki despite having very little in common now.

After my first year or so on the wiki, I wasn't satisfied anymore with the community's fandom activities, so I decided to go over to Tumblr and found it better aligned with my interests (fanart! fanfiction! in-depth analysis! not limited to One Piece! no power-leveling!). So I'd say OP wiki was my introduction to fandom, but Tumblr was where I really got into fandom.

I've always been a multifandom person on Tumblr. I remember being involved in the Doctor Who and Supernatural fandoms, then later Hannibal and Teen Wolf as they came out. I also spent a lot of time posting about various anime and manga series, but I can't remember most of them... My longest animanga fandom was and still is the Fate franchise.

I do not like the Twitter-ification of fandom at all, so now I'm not very active in fandoms, just enjoying fanworks in a quiet corner with friends.

I've occasionally thought about returning to editing, but I just don't have that obsessive energy anymore....
