November 2023 Media Wrap Up
Dec. 2nd, 2023 03:35 amI didn't do much in November, since my wifi was knocked out for three weeks. Read a few books, but I mostly went out, except for the week I got sick.
For manga/manhwa, I mostly just read my ongoings. I did read A Good Day to be a Dog. The k-drama for it was so cute, I was too impatient to wait and read the whole thing. My only grip with Good Day is that it dragged on the awkward "I like them but they don't like me" thing a bit too long, and the plot twist's reasoning is a bit infuriating. Someone recommended me Fool Night, and I thought it had a rather interesting premise, eco horror/dystopian. It's still kind of early in the story for me to form any solid opinion, but I definitely like it.
As for movies/television.... I only watched A Good Day to be a Dog in November. I meant to get around to Twinkling Watermelon, since I heard it was about some deaf/coda people, but I didn't have time. Hopefully I'll get around to it this month.
I wanted to watch more of The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren, but I couldn't watch them without the internet. Luckily, I downloaded Pluto before my internet went down, so I watched it. I only read Monster and 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa, so I didn't know what to expect from Pluto, other than it was inspired from Astro Boy. Honestly, I had a few issues with it, but I wonder it's from having to work with the constraints of Astro Boy. The story overall was really interesting, and its themes coincidence with one of my classes this semester, artificial intelligence in popular culture, so that was fun. I even recommended it to my professor. I'm nearly done with Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, so hooray. I might do a full write up on it, because I'm really loving it. My friend offered to watch Mobile Suit Gundam 00 with me over winter break, so I'll try to finish GWitch before.
I thought I would read more books while the internet was down, but surprisingly enough, I barely had time for any reading. After hearing so much about Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, I thought I would give it a try, but I didn't care much for it. On the inverse, I didn't expect much from Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang, but it ended up being one of my favorites of the year. Pretty great magical dark academia with sharp criticism of classism and sexism. I plan on doing a full review soon, but yeah, read this!
I read a few light novels while I was sick, all in the villainess genre. If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love vol 1 was sorta cute, but not very compelling to continue. I'm of the half mind to read vol 2 anyway, just in case it picks up. I read Stuck in a Time Loop: When All Else Fails, Be a Villainess vol 1 and 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! vol 1 back to back, and given their names, it was pretty confusing. Stuck in a Time Loop should have been interesting, but it just didn't catch my interest at all, and the characters were just boring. Carefree Life had a rough beginning, but I was enjoying it by the ending, so I'll continue to vol 2. Lastly, I read Modern Villainess: It's Not Easy Building a Corporate Empire Before the Crash vol 1 and 2. I don't remember what I expected from it before starting it, but it sure was not what I expected at all. It's almost all economics, which was startling after coming off three romance heavy light novels. It's not my thing at all, and I'm not sure why I even continued to vol 2? Probably was just hoping there'll be more character/plot development, but no, it was still nearly all economics. It's like the author just wanted to show off how much knowledge they had, and what they would do to change the 2008 economic crisis. Vol 2 ended with a foreshadowing of 9/11, which was pretty amusing. Almost tempted to read vol 3 just to see how will the villainess stop 9/11.
I meant to take advantage of my internet being down and finish Mahoyo, but I only managed to play a single chapter. Alas, I really will have to finish this over winter break. Aoko Aozaki is a darling though, and I kinda ship her with Alice Kuonji. Maybe after finishing Mahoyo, I'll try to write a fic of them. Lowkey want to write a fic between the Aoko sisters too.
